about
This is the first single from my debut EP which comes out early 2020. I wrote this song when I was 21, I moved out of my childhood house to go to university in 2013, my relationship with my mum was quite rocky, and I needed any excuse to change my surroundings. Our relationship strengthened because of the distance, but when it came time to move back home, I was anxious about how living together again might effect our relationship. I had to get these thoughts and feeling out, and that was how this song came about. I cried when I wrote this tune, there were so many things I wanted to say out loud that I never did, and just being able to in such a simple way as a song, was quite overwhelming. I’ve fallen out and back in love with this song many times over the last 4 years, but I’m finally happy with it now, I hope you are too.
lyrics
Who hit my nerve?
it feels like somebody has hurt me
you got some nerve
the world still turns and you sound just like a baby
maybe I’m trying to resist reality
lately it’s been only the future I can see
some day you’ll learn
my mother said eventually I’d get my turn
I guess I’m still my mother’s baby
trying to find my feet
I’m still my mother’s baby
to everyone I meet
when everyone said maybe, she said definitely
don’t let them call you crazy
What do you believe?
the man upstairs can deal with everything you need
now I don’t speak, when she asks me
before, she wouldn’t let me leave til I agreed
She said
”your brother’s watching you
and he does the things you do, do, do, do”
I guess I’m still my mother’s baby
trying to find my feet
I’m still my mother’s baby
to everyone i meet
when everyone said maybe, she said definitely
don’t let them call you crazy

Yazmin Lacey has one of the most unique voices in UK jazz/soul. Seriously catchy songwriting mixed with slick and groovy production. Big influence on me for the last couple of years. Steven Bamidele
Beautiful album with production reminiscent of Black Key's seminal album 'Brothers', and songwriting that echoes Leon Bridges and Aloe Blacc. Steven Bamidele
